making the room layout hard for discussion, and the colour scheme being dull so as to lower any motivation.

Personally I thought this was a bit too far (sportsmanship anyone?), but I was curious as to what actually contributes to a home advantage?

I've read a number of articles over the years about how playing an away game can be a considerable disadvantage above the obvious difference in supporter numbers. Here are some that I recall.

Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium's away team dressing room is 'L' shaped. Not only does this subconciously suggest "Lose" but it makes inter team communication more difficult as the manager has to talk around a corner.

It was noted that some away dressing rooms had the tactics board in full view of the corridor.

During a Champion's league game between Chelsea and Barcelona it was suggested that Bobby Wagner Jersey the away team dressing room only had three working showers and one mirror.

Away teams have considerably less space to get prepared. The home side often has adequate locker space for 4 or 5 pairs of boots and plenty of bench space to get ready whereas away dressing rooms are often smaller, more cramped affairs.

Simple luxuries. Huge TV screens, ice baths, carpets, more treatment tables etc.

I recall Roy Keane ensuring that Sunderland's away dressing room had pictures of Sunderland winning all over it as a bit of a mind game.

The away team probably slept Bobby Wagner Youth Jersey in a hotel the night before the match whereas the home players would have slept in their own beds.

The away team may have travelled a considerable distance/time and may be fatigued as a result.

Finally, a couple Robert Turbin Womens Jersey of interesting articles:

The crowd is more than likely cheering for them, and cheering against their opponent. It gets very loud on the pitch and very hard to concentrate. For example in American football, the guard often has to signal the center to snap because the center can't hear the quarterback because it's so loud. This causes great confusion and miscommunication. The morale aspect is important too.

The home team is more familiar with the field. Is this field easier to slip on than most? Is the grass longer? The environmental factors and familiarity will give you an edge over your opponent, as they need to consciously adjust their style to suit the field, while you, having practiced on this field and played on this field, have a much more natural attunement to it.

Lack of travel. Travel is very exhausting, even when you have professional clubs who spare no expense in keeping the players comfortable. You lose a day of preparation traveling as well, but the home team gets that extra day to stay loose and freshen up. If the away team is on the second or third consecutive travel, it can take a pretty heavy toll on their mental and physical state.

As for how big it is the advantage is, a study has indicated that for every 10,000 people in the stands, a home team in the English Premiership will score an additional 0.1 goals, on average. Wikipedia sums this up to 37% more goals, although how they reach that from the article presented is at present unclear. It is significant enough that they now track 'away goals' as a way to break ties.

In blog post titled "Home Field Advantage: What You See Depends On Where You Look (And What You Make Of Draws)", Chris Anderson writes about a book discussing home field advantage in football:

In these chapters, Moskowitz and Wertheim first document that the home

field advantage is ubiquitous across different team sports, as well as

across leagues and over time. They also argue that most of the

advantage home teams seem to have Robert Turbin Navy Jersey stems from referee decisions, rather

than things like travel, schedule, weather, or any other number of

factors that have been proposed over the years.

Sherman says California Chrome looks better
19:27, 2014-Oct-10

NEW YORK (AP) Art Sherman got his first glimpse of California Chrome in action in two weeks, and the trainer liked what he saw.

Sherman arrived in New York on Monday Doug Baldwin Jersey afternoon and watched his Triple Crown contender gallop at Belmont Park on Tuesday morning. It was the first time Sherman had observed the chestnut colt since he captured the Preakness.

"I thought he looked better now than he did after the Preakness," Sherman said. Kam Chancellor Womens Jersey "I couldn't believe how much weight he put on. Going on the Triple Crown trail, it's kind of rough. He's an amazing horse."

California Chrome will try for the first Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978 on Saturday in the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes.

The flashy 3 year old with four white feet will be the heavy favorite in the 1 mile Belmont, Doug Baldwin Authentic Jersey known as the "Test of the Champion" for its history of crushing Triple Crown dreams.

Only 11 horses have swept the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont in the same year. There have been 11 Triple tries since Affirmed, the most recent being Big Brown in 2008. He won the first two legs, and then was eased by jockey Kent Desormeaux in the Belmont.

I'll Have Another won the first two legs in 2012, but was scratched on Belmont eve with a tendon injury that ended his career.

After the Preakness, Sherman, 77, returned to his stable in Southern California. He sent California Chrome to New York in the care of Alan Sherman, his son and assistant trainer. The Belmont will be the colt's third demanding race in a short five week span.

"He's doing outstanding," Alan Sherman said. "I couldn't ask for anything more right now. I'm just enjoying the ride he's put us on."

The full California Chrome rooting section will be on hand Saturday. Perry Kam Chancellor Kids Jersey Martin, co owner and breeder of the colt with Steve Coburn, did not attend the Preakness. He was upset with treatment he received by Churchill Downs at the Derby.

Martin is not going to miss this chance to be part of history.

"Perry and his wife will get here late Wednesday night," Coburn said. "He'll probably lay real low until the day of the race. Him and his family are pretty reserved. That's why he gets out of town real quick so I can do all the talking."

Coburn and his wife, Carolyn, from northern Nevada are enjoying their first trip to New York.

"It was my first time in Kentucky, my first time in Maryland and now my first time in New York," Coburn said. "Carolyn would like to come back here and see all this when we got more time. We've kind of been rushed from here to there and back again."

For Art Sherman, it is a homecoming for the Brooklyn native.

"I haven't been back to Williamsburg in many years," Sherman said. "It's changed quite a bit. I probably can't afford Williamsburg now."

The Belmont draw takes place Wednesday morning. It's not fraught with as much drama as the Derby, where breaking from an extreme inside or outside post in a 19 or 20 horse field can quickly take a horse out of contention.

The Belmont, the longest of the Triple Crown races, is contested over a track with wide sweeping turns. It gives jockeys plenty of time to sort out early positions.

The Belmont lost a potential runner on Tuesday when trainer Linda Rice withdrew Kid Cruz from consideration. He ran eighth in the Preakness, 16 lengths behind California Chrome.

Kid Cruz might try an easier spot on the Belmont undercard, the $150,000 Easy Goer Stakes at 1 1 16 miles.

The likely challengers for California Chrome include Commanding Curve, Commissioner, General a Rod, Matterhorn, Matuszak, Medal Count, Ride On Curlin, Samraat, Social Inclusion, Tonalist and Wicked Strong.

tag deadlines ends with a bang
19:26, 2014-Oct-10

As the deadline to place the franchise tag on players approached, some teams were steadfast in their approach, while others made some last minute moves. ET on Monday. Let's take a look at some the most notable moves that were made a week before the free agency frenzy:

General manager Ray Farmer has been faced with some tough decisions since he took over the operation nearly three weeks ago. His first move was placing the transition tag on Pro Bowl center Alex Mack. It's a bit of a surprise that the team took this approach as they'll be paying him in the range of offensive tackle money ($10 million in 2014). The transition tag means that Mack can still sign an offer sheet from another team, but Cleveland would have five days to match. If Mack were to leave, the Browns would receive nothing in return as to where a non exclusive franchise tag would grant them two first round picks.

Pittsburgh also made a surprising move by transition tagging linebacker Jason Worilds. The one year deal will net Worilds $9.754 million, whereas the franchise tag would have cost the Steelers $11.455 million. The move may indicate that the team is looking to part ways with LaMarr Woodley, who is due a hefty amount in 2014.

Three time Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Orakpo will remain with the Redskins next Marshawn Lynch Authentic Jersey season as the team placed their non exclusive tag on him. While Orakpo will receive $11.455 million in compensation, he is still hopeful that a long term extension can get done.

"I don't have a problem with the decision [the Redskins] made, but I still want a long term deal," Orakpo told ESPN's Josina Anderson. "This is new to me. I'm just letting this play out to the end. I'm excited to be with the Redskins as of right now, but now we will go from here," he said.

"It's always good to try and finish up with the team that drafted you. However, it is a business and I understand Zach Miller Authentic Jersey the business. If it works out, then it works out. At the very least, I'm happy they took this step forward."

The Saints placed the non exclusive franchise tag on tight end Jimmy Graham on Friday. The curious part of this move is if the Saints Zach Miller Navy Jersey will pay Graham as a tight end or a wide receiver. Graham would earn $6.066 million as a tight end, but would receive $10.537 million if he's paid as a wide receiver. Graham's representation will likely cite the fact that he lines up as a wide receiver more than a traditional tight end would. The non exclusive tag allows Graham to work out a long term deal with another team. The Saints would then have a chance to match the offer, but if they didn't they would receive two first round picks.

Greg Hardy has been one of the most productive players at the defensive end position and the Panthers weren't going to allow him to hit the open market. General manager Dave Gettleman chose to place the tag on Hardy on Friday, which will net him $13.116 million. A long term deal could get hammered out in the meantime as Carolina would love to reduce that meaty salary cap number.

The Jets decided to place the team's franchise tag on kicker Nick Folk, who had the best seasons of his seven year career in Marshawn Lynch Navy Jersey 2013 by connecting on 92 percent of his field goals. He will earn $2.9 million.

Steelers depth still a work in progress
19:25, 2014-Oct-10

FS Mike Mitchell (Panthers). Had four interceptions, 312 sacks and two forced fumbles to help Carolina to NFC title game.

DL Cam Thomas (Chargers). A 330 pounder who can play any position on the defensive line.

WR Lance Moore (Saints). Looking to have a bounce back year after experiencing a major falloff in statistics (65 catches in 2012 to 37; 1,041 yards to 457).

CB Brice McCain (Texans). Only $65,000 guaranteed, so a low risk pickup for a team that had only three experienced cornerbacks before signing him.

RB LeGarrette Blount (Patriots). Adding him means the Cliff Avril Jersey Steelers won keep shuffling running backs series by series to find yards if Le Bell is hurt or needs a break.

WR Darrius Heyward Bey (Colts). Caught just 29 passes last season.

LB Arthur Moats (Bills). Will Steelers move him inside if they believe Jarvis Jones won need support outside?

DE Ziggy Hood (Jaguars). Helped by the unexpected $10 million bump in the salary cap, Jacksonville decided he was worth $16 million over four seasons.

WR Emmanuel Sanders (Broncos). Believes he can be an Antonio Brown type receiver in the Steven Hauschka Jersey right system.

OLB LaMarr Woodley (Raiders). Must change positions (to defensive end), much like James Harrison did after signing with Bengals.

WR Jerricho Cotchery (Panthers). State and wife is from the area.

DE Al Woods (Titans). Steelers were surprised when he landed a $4 million deal, the same money they paying the much more experienced Thomas.

TE David Johnson Steven Hauschka Kids Jersey (Chargers). San Diego will try to do what Pittsburgh couldn and that keep him healthy.

FS Ryan Clark (Redskins). Returns to the team he played for before signing with Steelers in 2006.

RB Jonathan Dwyer (Cardinals). Cliff Avril Navy Jersey Low risk deal pays him only $795,000.

OL Eric Olsen (Titans). Late season depth addition by Steelers gets a $645,000 deal.

ILB Larry Foote. Said he was offered minimum wage deals by multiple teams.

CB Curtis Brown. Third round bust.

OL Levi Brown. Never got on the field with Steelers.

DE Brett Keisel. No signal yet Steelers might bring him back for depth.

WR Plaxico Burress. Might not have made the team last season before getting hurt in camp.

RB Felix Jones. Former first round pick might have trouble finding work.

P Mat McBriar. Went unsigned last year until after the season started.

RB LaRod Stephens Howling. Torn ACL in one and only Steelers game.

LB Stevenson Sylvester. Good enough on special teams he should be able to find a job.

C Fernando Velasco. Teams still waiting for Achilles injury to heal.

LB Jamaal Westerman. Played in one game with Steelers.

The Steelers depth chart looks nothing like it did when they finished the season against the Browns more than three months ago " and nothing like it will when they open the season against a still unannounced opponent in a little less than five months.

Even after the most extensive free agent driven roster reshuffling to date for the Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin tandem, with seven players arriving via free agency and nine departing, the Steelers have significant lineup holes and depth issues.
